Demolition Of Pittsburgh Penguins’ Former Home, The Igloo [Photos]
The Igloo, also known as Pittsburgh Civic Arena and the former home of the Pittsburgh Penguins, is being demolished from the inside out.
The Pens now play their home games at the nearby Consol Energy Center and The Igloo, which was built in 1961 and the first retractable roof venue in major pro sports, was marked for demolition by the Sports & Exhibition Authority of Pittsburgh in 2010.
A last-ditch effort to save the arena by making it a historical site delayed the process, but after the Pittsburgh Historic Review Commission denied the application and a lawsuit failed, there was nothing to do but rip the old building apart.
Demolition officially started on September 26.
Here’s what The Igloo looks like now.
