A Chicago-area man accused of filming surreptitious nude videos of ESPN reporter Erin Andrews in a hotel room was arrested at Chicago’s O’Hare airport Friday night, the FBI said.
Michael David Barrett faces federal charges of interstate stalking for taking the videos, posting the videos online and trying to sell them to celebrity Web site TMZ, the FBI said in a statement. He’s scheduled to make an initial court appearance Saturday morning in U.S. District Court in Chicago.
The charges were filed in Los Angeles, where TMZ is based. Andrews is identified in the federal complaint as E.A.
48 years old. Holds a professional job. Has a college aged daughter.
This might be the most disturbing part of the alleged complaint, courtesy of the Chicago Sun-Times:
Michael David Barrett, 48, allegedly traveled to at least two states, learned the room numbers where Andrews was staying, and then altered the peepholes to those rooms, the Los Angeles FBI said in a criminal complaint entered Friday.
Then the story goes on to say, via Andrews’ attorney, that it is disturbing for hotel employees to give out room numbers for high-profile people.
Grossman said it appears Andrews was being “stalked in numerous cities’’ but no one ever actually entered her hotel rooms.
He said he didn’t know how Barrett allegedly obtained Andrews’ room numbers, but said, “I am very disturbed that any hotel would release the room number of any guest, especially a high-profile individual. We intend to pursue this and get to the bottom of it.’’
Um, how about a better question: How did Barrett know which hotel Andrews was staying in far enough in advance to get a flight and make arrangements to get that peephole camera installed while she was in town?
