Hockey moms are busy snapping up reading glasses and that coat.

There she was, strolling onto the ice like she knew the terrain.

That tight jacket, pulled against her tightly, accentuating her, uh, curves. Black pants giving her perfect contrast against the white playing surface.

Those flowing locks that are usually pulled back to give her a professional look, were accented with the librarian glasses.

Sarah Palin burst onto the hockey scene this weekend in Philadelphia as the hottest woman to drop a puck on the 2008-2009 season.

2008 will be remembered as the year sports franchises, at a dizzying pace, trotted out hot chicks to do the honors before manly events. Baseball is the most guilty party. We can only hope basketball and hockey have taken notice.

China is calling this the year of the rat. We Americans can call 2008 the “Year Of Hot Chicks Doing The Honors.”

Miss America Kirsten Haglund (Tigers): Detroit went out and got Miss America to throw out the first pitch early in the year and promptly went on a huge losing streak that literally ended their season. The World of Isaac hasn’t been happy since.

Nicollette Sheridan (Dodgers): Joe Torre comes to town, the ladies swoon and beg to do the honors just to be close to the world champion manager. Sherdian rubs off some good luck and L.A. makes it to the NL Championship.

Geri Halliwell (Dodgers): Even though she’s British and wasn’t raised with this great American sport, Ms. Halliwell really gave her all during a 2008 visit to Chavez Ravine. “While Posh trotted out in high-heeled wedges, Geri stuck with trainers so she could really give it some welly,” the British papers reported.

Mariah Carey (Yomiuri Giants): Even the Japanese are starting to get into the American hot chick market for first pitches. Mariah just happened to be in town to promote something and stopped by the field to hold a ball for photographers. Eventually she threw it and people got out of the way.

Kendra Wilkinson (Padres): While 2008 was a huge year for Kendra (she found a much younger boyfriend), Hef couldn’t have been pleased with all the outside of the bedroom activities she took part in. Throwing out the first pitch was just the first of many this summer.

Nicky Hilton (Some Korean Team): This might be our second favorite hot chick first pitch of the summer and flew under the radar in America. Ms. Hilton looked pretty damn sexy in her Chuck’s and the hat.

Emmanuelle Chriqui (Dodgers): This Canadian beauty upset some of her fellow countrymen by throwing the heat on American soil instead of at a Blue Jays game. See, this is where the Dodgers are smart. The ladies don’t have to fly 7 hours for such an assignment. They can throw out the pitch, have a Diet Pepsi and be home before the 4th inning gets started.

DeAnna Pappas (Dodgers): Sense a trend yet? The Dodgers have had a magical season thanks to Manny and the wonderful women who have given these guys a reason to show up every single day. The great incentive on this day was to see DeAnna, who was/is single.

Marisa Miller (Cubs): The Holy Grail of 2008. Never before in our short memory has a SI cover model thrown out a first pitch. While the Cubs continued their futility, Miller became the poster model for hot chicks throwing out a first pitch. The keys are the jeans and jersey. Perfect combo. We’ll never forget.
